You know, I really don't use this journal anymore. All of my sewing posts end up in my regular journal [info]puzzleoflight instead. Instead of shutting this one down, I think I'll leave it up as an archive, but for any new costuming posts, you'll probably have to check my regular journal.

Jun. 21st, 2005 @ 05:09 pm Commission Progress....
After completing the Fire Sprite, I decided to get one of the commissions out of the way (the next one will be done in July), that way I can more adequately focus on my own costumes. So far the Kankuro costume has had it's share of difficulties, but is coming along nicely. It definitely reminded me of why I hate working with strech or knit fabrics, though. Fortunately I won't have to work with that type of fabric for the rest of the season.

At any rate, I finished the shirt for the costume, and will try to finish the pants tonight. I also may start work on the shoes, but we'll have to see. I think I'm running low on fabric glue. The hood is still giving me trouble, and I've determined that the fabric is just not going to work for what I want to do. Instead, I'm going to try to get some plain black cotton and play with that.

I need to finish up the Dawn costume as well, though at least that one doesn't have much work left. I've pared down my planned list somewhat, with only four costumes for each convention and the three commissions. It's still going to be a packed schedule, however, as Dragon*Con is a little more than two months away. Keep your fingers crossed that I'll get everything done in time.

Current Mood: working
After finishing the Fire Sprite last week (I'll get pictures eventually, I promise), I've pressed forward into doing Kankuro (one of the commissions). Although the material I chose for this costume works well for what I'm trying to do, it's incredibly difficult to work with and has caused me no end of frustration. Fortunately I should be completely done with the sewing part of the shirt and most of the pants (minus the elastic) tonight. Tomorrow is going to be elastic and detail work, attaching the design to the front of the shirt, and figuring out how to modify the hood pattern. Thursday I'm going to put together the shoes.

I'm moving this weekend, so I seriously suspect I won't get any sewing done from Friday until Monday. Fortunately the Dawn costume is next up on my list, and it's nice and simple. Hooray!

After deleting my Cosplaylab profile, I decided that I need somewhere to store my costume planner, other than the notebook it's currently in. Therefore, I'm putting it into the bio section of this journal and will kill two birds with one stone.

Current Mood: sick
Just tried on the Fire Sprite and it doesn't look too shabby. Not too happy with the skirt, but it was a bit of a rush job to begin with. At the very least it looks reasonably like I was aiming for, so I guess I can't complain.

Thank god I'm done with it though. I'd like to say that I am never, never going to handsew 3+ yards of sequins again, but I'm sure I'll eventually do something just as crazy. At least the fringe was easy, even if the bodice weighs a ton (it's got to weigh at least four pounds... I'm not kidding). Other than the skirt not looking exactly how I wanted, the arm drapes are the only real complaint I have. They look exactly like they're supposed to, yes, but I can't lift my arms above my shoulders. I guess when I'm wandering around at a con in this costume, I can't do anything that requires heavy lifting. Heh.

Anyway, I'm working on cutting out the pattern pieces for Kankuro and will probably knock out the hat tonight. I wanted to go find another pair of flip flops for the shoes, but I'm really not feeling well so staying home is a good idea.

Finished the Fire Sprite bodice completely. I got the extra grommet in and fully beaded fringe-d it. It weighs a ton, but it looks really cool. About halfway through the hem of the skirt now, which is also progress. Going to try to finish another panel tonight. I will get this done in time for Sci-Fi Summer. Oh yes.

Current Mood: productive
I've closed off my commissions for this year so it looks like I'll only be doing four or five. Four of them are definite. Grant wants a Gourry costume as well, but I'm really unsure if I can do the armor. Plus I don't think he can get the deposit to me in time. Rob's already put down the deposit on both his costumes, so I've gotten pretty much everything needed to make them at this point. The only things missing are Kankuro's gloves (which I'll eventually get off Ebay) and makeup (which will be purchase shortly before the con), and Jirayia's wig. Originally the wig wasn't supposed to be my problem, but Rob has no idea where to look for one, so I'm tacking on a little extra for a finder's fee. Jirayia's got such weird hair, the wig is probably going to be rather expensive, sadly. My guess is both costumes are going to run about $300 - $350. Almost $200 of that is materials alone. I'm still not making Kerasu, dammit!

I've made some progress on my own costumes as well. I sat down and worked out a weekly timeline for costume creation and have been effectively sticking to it. I'm working on the Fire Sprite this week, and have made a great deal of progress on the skirt. I'm hoping to have the sequins completely done by Monday. Then the only things left to do are add a couple more rows of fringe (which is done with the sewing machine and is really quick), add another grommet to the back of the bodice, and attach the waistband and zipper to the skirt. Then it's done. Right now, getting all that complete by the 7th isn't sounding too impossible.

I've also done a bit of prop work on the Dawn costume, since I have to let each flower on the headpiece dry for 24 hours. So basically, I attach one flower per day. Heh. I keep forgetting about the props for that costume though, and realized that I still need the ring of keys from the costume shop. Might pick that up with my birthday money. I'm going to get a real pomegranate from Whole Foods a couple days before the contest, though. The fake ones at craft stores are way too small.

I managed to win the green wool suiting from the Ebay auction, so now I have the fabric for the Polly costume. I also won a charm bracelet for that costume, which was seriously cheap (like $3). I still need to get the patterns I'm going to use, and the grossgrain ribbon for the hat, but the materials are coming together nicely. Still haven't decided about the shoes, though. I really need a pair of green round toe pumps, but I don't want to pay a fortune for shoes I probably will only wear with one outfit. May just get a pair of black round toe pumps and fudge it.

Speaking of shoes, I found the perfect pair of shoes for Tsunade a while back but keep forgetting to order them. That may also be where some of my birthday money goes. At least they're cheap. Only $20 or so with shipping.

Anyway, I need to get back to tearing apart the flip flops for the shoes for Rob's Kankuro costume and handsewing the sequins on the hem of the Fire Sprite. I love it when I get in productive moods.

I'm really, really hoping I can get the deposit for Rob's costumes as soon as possible, since I just found the perfect fabric for Polly on Ebay. It was so hard to find that I'm desperate not to let it get away!

**EDIT**

I've put in a bid for the fabric, as well as a charm bracelet for the Polly costume. Keep your fingers crossed for me. If I get both of these, the only thing I have to worry about is finding the buckle for the belt and the shoes.

Current Mood: determined
It's been practically forever since I actually updated this thing. I've had more than my fair share of trouble since this year began and haven't had time to work on hardly anything at this point. *sigh*

I'm about to move back to Macon so hopefully in the time between the move and school beginning in August, I can concentrate completely on nothing but sewing. I had to drop a few of my more expensive personal costumes this year, due to lack of funds, and added a few less expensive ones to take their places. I've also picked up a number of commissions, though only three of them are paid thus far.

So here's the revision and where I am with each costume:

Commissions

(Whenever)Alissa's Moth Gown - No idea when I'm going to get this done. It's not a paid commission, which is why I've been seriously slacking on it. I hope to finish it eventually though.

(Whenever)Chris's Japanese Feudal Lord - I've done a bit of work on this one, actually, though it too isn't a paid commission. The kataginu is getting close to being done. I haven't worked on the hakama other than cutting out the pattern yet. We still haven't bought the fabric for the hapi.

(AWA)Rob's Jiraiya (Naruto) - I'm sending him the quote tonight and we should start buying materials soon. This is actually a paid commission.

(AWA)Rob's Kankuro (Naruto) - Ditto. Same as Jiraiya.

(D*C)Grant's Gourry (Slayers) - Grant requested this and I told him it would be tentative. I wanted to make sure I knew how to make the armor before committing to it. I'm still researching the funfoam and poly method at the moment, and doing some experimenting. I should know fairly soon if I can make it. If so, this will be another paid commission.

Personal Costumes

(D*C)Persephone Dawn - This year's Dawn costume. I'm about halfway through it.

(D*C)Polly Perkins (Sky Captain) - This was the slightly less expensive costume I replaced the Katrina gown with, though it's definitely not masquerade material (*sigh*). So far I've done some pattern research and bought the hat. That's about it. Might be difficult to get the tweed for the suit until it's closer to fall.

(D*C)Fire Sprite - It's mostly done. I've finished the bodice other than adding some trim. The skirt is about halfway done, as I need to finish the trim on that and add the zipper. The horns are done, the gauntlets and fishnets are purchased. I'll definitely have this one in time this year.

(D*C)Fuu (Samurai Champloo) - A last minute addition and, remarkably, another anime costume, which I don't normally do for Dragon*Con. I wanted something else for the convention, however, and Fuu should be fairly simple and inexpensive. The only difficult part might be the wig or the shoes.

(AWA)Mireille Bouquet (Noir) - The easy costume for AWA. I have the boots, but that's it. Currently pattern shopping.

(AWA)Tsunade (Naruto) - Everything has been purchased for this costume but the shoes. I haven't started on it yet, but when I do it will probably go fast.

(AWA)Chiyo (Azumanga Daioh) - I need to do this one before I do any personal costumes, since I've borrowed a friend's fuku to figure out how to put one together. I'm trying to finish Chris's commission before I do any more work on my own costumes, however, so I should probably get in gear.

(AWA/Halloween)Sae (Fatal Frame) - I want to have this one done in time for AWA, but I won't be heartbroken if I don't. I do want it in time for Halloween, though.

Current Mood: good
I just finished the daishiki... minus the trim, which I will have to put on tomorrow. But, hey, the actual shirt is done. Thank goodness. Now I can concentrate soley on the Akihabara dress. I still need to sew the soutache tonight, but I can do most of the actual work on it tomorrow. I am very pleased right now.

I've been suffering from a severe lack of motivation lately, but if I buckle down and actually do the work, I manage to get things done. I just have to keep on myself to keep going, even when I don't want to. And now that the commission is done, that means more money for me. W00t!

**EDIT**

The soutache is sewn to the Akihabara dress. Now I am utterly exhausted and must sleep. It has been a productive night.

Mar. 28th, 2005 @ 08:39 pm *Deep Breath*
Current Mood: upset
My roommates just destroyed the trim I was going to use for the daishiki. I got the money from them to replace it, but it's still incredibly frustrating. I was using the washing machine to soak the trim (it's braided) before stiching it to the shirt, since the shirt part is white and the trim is dark blue and brown. I was hoping the color would bleed out some in the water, and was going to lay it flat and use a hairdryer to blow it dry when I was done. I even told them I was doing this, and then they dumped a load of clothes in on top of the trim and put the washer on the heavy cycle so the trim got completely mangled. Totally not happy!

At any rate, I have to go back to the fabric store tomorrow to get more trim to replace what was ruined, but it puts me at a disadvantage because I wanted to have the damn daishiki done tonight. I was making good time on it too. I guess I'll finish up the hemming and do nothing but sew trim tomorrow.

I have to finish both the daishiki and the Akihabara dress by Thursday. Fortunately I've gotten most of my NERO stuff done, so I have time to do this... I think. The daishiki should be done by tomorrow at the very least, and I'm planning on doing a decent amount on the Akihabara dress tonight. My goal for tonight on the dress was originally to finish sewing the soutache loops on the collar (I'm doing these by hand so they're sturdier) and do some pinning. I may actually do a little more on the dress now that I can't finish the daishiki. Hopefully everything will turn out well in the end.

Mar. 25th, 2005 @ 09:27 pm I Know I Should be Sleeping....
Current Mood: pleased
I'm supposed to be up at nine tomorrow, so I should really get some sleep, but first I wanted to post about some of the costuming progress I made today.

I managed to borrow Rob's iron to fuse the interfacing to the material for my Akihabara dress today. It worked so well I can definitely see myself using fusible interfacing more often in the future. I also did a little pinning on the dress and it should be ready to sew pretty soon. My goal is to at least have the main body of the dress completed by next Thursday to wear clubbing... and I have cute boy incentive to make sure I get it done on time. *g*

The daishiki is pretty much done, I just need to finish up a wee bit of hemming and then get in touch with my fencing teacher. As much as I like working with linen, I'm glad this project is done. It took way longer to finish it than I thought it would.

I'm in the process of organizing my costume and convention schedules for the next couple of years. Yes, I did say years. There are so many costumes I want to do that I finally realized that I'd have to schedule times to work on them and wear them all. That way I won't keep adding random costumes at the last minute. At least in theory.

I really want to start doing more anime costumes. Thus far most of what I've done has been original designs because I tend to get more use out of them. This is going to change a bit, as it's always nice to do something more recognizable.

Mar. 22nd, 2005 @ 08:31 pm All Right....
Current Mood: thoughtful
If things go according to plan, I should have the Daishiki finished tonight. The only things I have left to do on it are attach the sleeves and hem it. Definitely won't take too long.

I started pinning the interfacing to the Akihabara Dress today. Since I finally got everything cut out on that one, I'm slowing down a little bit to make sure I get all the little details perfect. The fabric was super expensive, and though I have some left over, I'd much rather not have to use it.

I took a break from sewing and revised my costume/convention schedule a little while ago. Once I've finished fine-tuning it, I'll post the new one up here. It's not incredibly different, but I added and removed and few things, as well as moved some things around.

One really quick thing I added were the white PVC gloves for Michael's Zapp Brannigan costume. I have the material for them, I just need to pick up the pattern. I didn't have them done in time for Dragon*Con last year because I had two weeks to put together both his and Katy's costume. I will definitely not be taking any last-minute commissions this year.
About this Entry
Mar. 21st, 2005 @ 11:28 pm Wow, I've Been Slacking....
Current Mood: lazy
I have actually been doing costuming work, just very, very slowly. My fencing teacher commissioned a daishiki halfway through February, so I've been working on that for a while. The linen I've been using hates me, however, or rather my sewing machine hates the linen, so it's been going a bit slowly. I should have it finished this week, though, so I can move on to other things once it's done.

I haven't made any progress on the Moth Gown. I know this is because of the lack of deadline, plus the fact that I just don't like the fabric, but really, I need to kick myself in the ass about it.

Chris's Japanese Feudal Lord is also going slowly. We still haven't found the right fabric for the yukata, but I could've probably completed the kataginu by now. Like I said, I've been slacking. This will be remedied in short order.

One thing I really need to do is limit the number of costumes I'm making for myself at the moment. Since I'm broke, this is less than difficult, but I've still been slipping up now and again. For example, I'm partway through a new dress that I designed less than a month ago. I've been a very bad girl on this. So I'm going to finish up the daishiki and the dress and then no more personal costumes until my two commissions are completed. I have enough ren stuff for Faire without adding to the pile.

I've also put the portfolio on hold for a while, so I can concentrate on the actual sewing. Plus I haven't found a ledger I actually like to contain it all. I'm still looking, but not hard.

I think part of the problem I've been having getting the commissions done is the fact that the daishiki is the only one I'm actually getting paid for. Money's always a good incentive to get things done, and as much as I like Chris and Alissa, it's free work with no deadline on both costumes, so I'm more prone to slacking. This is obviously not an excuse, but perhaps I need to come up with something to keep me interested in working on the costumes. For the Moth Gown, I just don't like the fabric, more than anything. But it's not my dress, so I don't have a say in it. For the Japanese Feudal Lord it's the fact that I like the fabric too much; it's so expensive, I'm afraid of screwing it up!

I love the fabric for the new dress, which is probably why I was so gung-ho on jumping into it. It's this incredible foil-like, metallic, silver-blue spandex. It looks like something a superhero costume would be made out of, and the dress design is based on a cheongsam; something I've always wanted to make. I even have black silk cord and hematite (!) buttons for the closure. It's going to be beautiful and so, so cool!

Anyway, enough babbling and more work for me. I just finished cutting out all the peices of the new dress, and I'm about to finish up the pinning on the daishiki. Tomorrow the daishiki will be stiched, and then I talk to my fencing teacher about whether he'd like me to add trim or not. Personally I think it would look better if I did, but it's his commission, so it really depends on whether he wants to pay the money for it.

So I've pretty much completely updated the website with the new pictures and formatting. I'm not going to move it to a new domain yet because, to put it bluntly, I can't afford it. The only thing keeping the site from going live, however, are pictures of the Zapp Brannigan and Alice in Wonderland costumes I made Michael and Katy for D*C last year. For some odd reason, they themselves didn't take pictures of their own costumes, and I haven't been able to find any pictures of them online. Which I guess means I'll have to steal back the costumes temporarily to take pictures of them on the dressform, and then see if I can talk M&K into taking some candid shots.

*le sigh*

Other than that, the website's done, and since my foot is pretty much healed (there's no pain, though I'm still getting a little numbness now and again) it's time for me to get back down to business. It was very frustrating being disabled, as I currently have two commissions I'm supposed to be working on and haven't been able to do a thing on either one. Thank goodness neither of the people who commissioned the costumes need them anytime soon!

Starting tomorrow I'll be working on the "Moth Gown" again, and at some point this week I really need to get in touch with Chris again to get accurate measurements. I could've started on the hakama and kataginu a long time ago if I hadn't been waiting on those. I've sent him two e-mails about it so far but haven't gotten a response, so I guess I'll have to call him if I want to make any progress. I hate using the telephone, though. Weird residuals from a childhood phobia.

I'm trying very desperately not to begin working on one of my personal costumes at the moment, especially Tsunade, since I have everything for it, because I need to be dedicating my time to the commissions. I will behave, however, and not give in to temptation.

Speaking of my own planned costumes, I still haven't bought the fabric for the Katrina gown. I was planning on waiting and using my tax return for that, since money is tight at the moment. I also need to figure out if the stripes are closer to a half-inch or one inch. What do you guys think? Do they look half-inch or one inch to you? (I'm thinking half-inch, but I've got a terrible eye for measurement.)

Want to sew, dammit! But I can't. Not yet. Not until this stupid foot heals. *sigh*

Someone over on [info]dragoncon asked what costumes we were making for D*C this year and it got me in the mood to do some work. Only I can't. I think I'm going to end up organizing my sewing projects, since I can't really do anything else. Put them all in seperate bags with their respective patterns and notions. That's better than nothing, right?

I also need to get in touch with Chris and set up a time where I can get more accurate measurements and purchase the fabric for his shirt. Think I'll send him an e-mail about that in a minute.

Money is going to be so tight this year, but I think I can do what I want to do. The Dawn costume is going to cost a little bit of money, mainly for the shoes, but I've already got the fabric (leftover white crepe from the Snowdrop gown), so that cuts down on cost a little. The Katrina gown is going to be sooooo expensive, but then I was expecting it. The Fire Sprite isn't going to cost any more money, fortunately, and it's so closed to being finished. I'm not sure how much Tsunade's going to cost. I have the patterns already (I think... I may have to double check), but only have the fabric for the top so far. I think the blue cotton I have in droves is going to be too bright for the pants, sadly, and as much as I'd love to make the jacket out of green silk, I don't see that happening. Oh well, a girl can dream.

Anyway I'm probably boring you right now, so I'm going to go do the organizational thing to keep myself occupied.

Current Mood: creative
Having a fractured foot has made it almost impossible to do any costuming work right now. I don't have a cutting table (don't have room for one), so I generally cut all my pattern pieces on the floor. I can't get up and down easily right now, so I can't do the cutting and pinning I need to be doing. Because of this I've had to push back a few costumes I was planning, as well as drop a couple of the more superfluous ones for this year. So far, this is what I have in store for myself this year:

Costume Calendar )

Now on to other things...

I started working on my portfolio last week. So far I have several pages done with the layout/swatches/etc. However, although I've slowly been taking digital photos of the costumes on the dressform, I haven't figured a way to print any of the pictures out to paste into the portfolio. I'm thinking I may have to burn them to a CD and get them printed at Kinkos or something. My printer utterly sucks, so there's no way I'm going to have them printed here.

The portfolio itself is turning out really nicely, however. It's my first attempt at any sort of scrapbooking and it's starting to look really cool. I still need to buy the actual book, though, but that will have to wait until I come into some more money.
About this Entry
Jan. 12th, 2005 @ 06:47 pm It's Been a While, Hasn't It?
With the holidays and then the start of the new year crashing all down upon me at once, I haven't had the chance to do much costuming work thus far. It looks like I will be retiring from my daily job and moving back to Macon at the end of January, so I should have plenty of free time to catch up on all my sewing until classes begin again in the summer semester.

I have several projects planned for this year, all of them costume-related, though not all specifically costumes themselves. One of the big projects I'm working on at the moment is photographing all of my previously created costumes on my new dressform. Once this task is complete, I will then use said pictures to create both the physical portfolio as well as the one on the website (which will be moving to a permanent domain fairly soon).

I have two commissions to create between now and the end of February, and then in March I'll begin ordering fabric for my Katrina Gown. I also have two other costumes I've been working on for a while which I will be finishing up moderately soon (before I begin Katrina, at least).

One of the things I need to make sure I do soon is purchase my membership for Dragon*Con 2005 and AWA. The closer it gets to con time, the more expensive admission gets! I also need to start looking into a place to stay for Dragon*Con at least. AWA, I can normally sleep at a friend's house, since they don't have a lot of afterhours activities.

Also, if I'm going to be moving back to Macon, I'd like to start doing work for a few of the community theaters down there, so I may have a few shows to add to my resume in a few months. We will have to see.

Dec. 27th, 2004 @ 06:50 pm Time to Get Down to Work Again....
Current Mood: nervous
Now that the holidays have passed, I'm finding the urge to get back to work again. I still need to finish Alissa's dress (which I will probably do Thursday or the beginning of next week) and then I need to get started on Chris's commission. Speaking of Chris's commission, we still need to buy the cloth and pattern for the shirt, and I need to order the pattern for the pants and vest from the website. Won't be able to do that before Friday, however, as I've got almost no money in the bank and need to wait until my next paycheck.

I've also added another costume to my long list of things I'm going to do this year: I'll be making an Anbu chick costume (from Naruto) for AWA. That way I can be Anbu chick during the day and Tsunade for the costume contest. I'm calling her Anbu chick because I don't know her name. I don't think anyone does actually, though the character seems to have some connection to Kakashi and (now deceased) Hayate.

But I'm getting off track again....

I purchased a dressform a week or so ago, and it should be arriving in the mail sometime soon. This will make things so much easier on me for a number of reasons. I'm very glad I bit the bullet and shelled out the money for such a large purchase.

Speaking of large purchases, once my refund check arrives in the mail, I'm going to have to buy the fabric for my Katrina gown. This is probably the most I'm going to spend on fabric for any one project, so naturally I'm nervous about spending so much money. I want the gown to be perfect, however, so that's what I'm going to do. It will be my first time competing in the D*C masquerade, and I always said I wanted to make sure I had something special before getting up there. I definitely think the Katrina gown qualifies.

Dec. 21st, 2004 @ 11:02 pm A New Year, A New Leaf....
Current Mood: determined
I've decided to get a little more serious about my costuming, so I'm doing a big unification project of all my completed works and resources. I've settled on a name: Sonata Costumes, and will be obtaining my own domain and creating a new website shortly after the first of the year. I've also got a hard copy portfolio planned (which means new pictures of all my completed costumes on my new dressform), and am taking on projects to pad out my portfolio a bit. Finally, I'll be printing up business cards to hand out at conventions or to anyone who seems to be interested in my work.

With all this housecleaning and organizing, it made sense to change the name of my sewing journal to reflect the more professional attitude I'm attempting. The old journal [info]jeweldoll just didn't seem to fit, and I didn't feel like paying to change the user name. So I'm going to simply move the shop talk here, and hopefully those who read my sewing journal will follow.

As this is my first entry in the new journal, as well as a discussion of what I'm planning for the new year, I think it would be fitting to discuss my upcoming projects for 2005. So far, here's what I'm working on:

December 2004 - Finishing up Alissa's commissioned Autumn Moth Gown
January 2005 - Creating Chris's commissioned Hakama, Kataginu, and Hapi
February 2005 - Finishing up the Fire Sprite

I'm planning on taking a few more commissions this year, but we'll see how that goes. When school is in session, I don't have a great deal of spare time to work on various projects. It's during the breaks between semesters that I get the most done, hence the reason the Katrina gown, my biggest project this year, is scheduled partially during spring break.
